The Acton Anglers Knot Tying Guide
A list of very useful knots and when to use them.

Uni knot - Also known as the Duncan loop or Hangman's knot (Yes, this is the knot they use to tie nooses and hang people with). Simple, relatively strong, and very easy to tie, this is a great knot to attach a hook or lure to your mainline or to connect two lines of similar diameter. The loop can be tightened to be snug up against the eye of you hook/lure, or loosened to give your lure more action in the water. When the mainline is pulled, either from the angler or a fish striking, the knot will automatically close tight.

Palomar knot - An extremely strong and easy to tie knot for attaching a hook or lure to your line. When tying the knot, the line is doubled for strength. When finished, the knot is very small and does not stand out from your hook or lure.

Surgeon's loop - One of the easiest ways to create a very strong loop on the end of your line. It is basically a 2-3 turn overhand loop tied with doubled line. This knot is very useful for finishing off homemade leaders and snelled hooks.

Arbor knot - This knot is used for attaching line to an empty reel spool. Its clever design allows you to tie this knot quickly and easily. It features 2 overhand knots, one for securing the line to the spool, and the other for "locking in" the first overhand knot. When tightened, the knot clings to the spool, allowing you to begin filling up your reel.
